An artist and his family seek an extension and an ADU for their 1950s estate in Old Pasadena. We plan to add a sculptural, cantilevered extension to the existing residence that responds to the location’s dramatic hillside conditions and expansive views. We seek to highlight these views and invite natural light by implementing a variety of fenestration. The project will infuse Japanese craft into traditional Pasadena Craftsman style, thereby emphasizing a shared attention to the harmony of wood and light. The extension will feature a hipped roof in the yose-mune style, pulling from traditional Japanese principles of construction. The focal point of the extension will be a library, which will accommodate space for pursuits such as music and study. Meanwhile, the organization of light through windows will order the shape of the structure of the ADU in the backyard. Geometric breaks of windows will diffuse light throughout its interior, while vertical wood siding on its exterior emphasizes verticality and creates contrast with the backyard’s topography.
