Silver Lake rises and folds in on itself, a hillside neighborhood defined by its terraced lots, dusty light, and the quiet ritual of outdoor life conducted just above the street. This project belongs to that tradition. New steps from the back porch of the main house lead up through the garden and into a raised pool area for bathing and leisure, softly outlined by half-walls, tiles, and greenery. The space opens to sky and breeze while holding itself apart from the neighborhood below.

A small pool house tucks the outdoor space away from the adjacent street, making a series of secluded open-air courtyards that trade on Silver Lake's long history of private gardens and indoor-outdoor modernism. A singular, broad roof extends overhead, creating a dynamic relationship between shelter and exposure: sometimes opening the indoors to sky, other times extending outward to form a poolside cabana and shaded carport. The overhang blurs programmatic boundaries the way the neighborhood itself blurs them, the line between house and hillside, between private and communal, between city and canyon.

Informed by the typology of the Roman Bathhouse, the plaza incorporates a gradient of conditioned spaces tuned to the specific quality of Silver Lake light, its angle, its duration, its way of moving across a south-facing slope through the afternoon. Each zone operates at a different atmospheric register: degrees of enclosure, levels of shade, variations in temperature. The pool and patio serve as the central gathering field. Beside it, the cabana and pool house layer in zones of intimacy and shade. Together, the multiple zones provide a dedicated space for relaxation, wellness, and communal life, a domestic ritual as old as the hillside itself.
