Our clients came to us as a growing family needing an ADU and additional outdoor space in the side yard of their Crenshaw property. We redeveloped the entire site into a series of interconnected courtyards of varying programs. We designed the interiors of the ADU as a flexible space for a home office, guest accommodations, and a workout room. Our millwork package includes a Murphy bed, with an integrated mirror installed for a dual bedroom/home gym function, and a custom full bookshelf wall. White oak hardwood flooring, Forbo cabinets, vaulted ceilings and skylights make the ADU a special staycation. Meanwhile, we designed the fence to serve several functions: a visual and safety barrier, a play zone for their dog, and an understated, museum-quality sculpture. The wood batten system fluctuates between opacity and transparency, allowing their dog to see into the world without negating the privacy of the yard. The unique elliptical fence shape creates a screening effect that softens the edge between public and private space. Several fine details, including an integrated lock system and a scribed slope to match the site's topography, transform this everyday object into something extraordinary and awesome. What was suburban is now urban.
