Lassen Street Residence

Northridge, CA

Single Family Home, Residential
Description

For this mid-century Eichler-esque residence tucked in the San Fernando Valley, we started with the idea of preserving the post-and-beam framework. A strong rectilinear massing at the center of the house was reimagined as a new service core for various building systems, including the chimney, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. To add light and improve airflows, we subtracted visual weight in the walls and clumsy soffits to make new spaces for storage between the kitchen, living room, and exterior. New skylights allow for oblique lighting patterns throughout the day, significantly altering the house’s complexion. These openings shine both a literal and figurative spotlight on the star of this space: the intricate floor-to-ceiling Inax tilework. Custom milled wood paneling and integrated Fisher & Paykel appliances buttress pops of cool green, dark blue, and gray tile illuminated by sconces from RBW—conjuring delicate mist lingering over an idyllic forest lake.
