A cinematographer approached SPEEDBOAT to transform his newly acquired hillside abode. The 1930s craftsman had seen better times and the decision was made to gut it entirely and meticulously recompose the spaces with classical and Japanese proportioning systems in mind. We cut into the building envelope to add all new, site-specific openings that frame views of the Mount Washington area. We included a new 200 square foot addition at the rear of the house, which symmetrized the building footprint and allowed for 20' long sliding glass patio doors to be oriented to the rear garden. We also designed a new roofline to accentuate the silhouette of the house, a big hat with a flap for a jewel-box home. The material palette has all natural finishes, including custom douglas fir millwork, poured-in-place terrazzo countertops with river rock aggregate, and unpainted, clay plaster walls. The home features natural hemp insulation, flooring made from cork, and hand-made Heath ceramic tile.
