Description

We reconfigured the floor plan of this Garvanza-Highland Park historic craftsman for its new, modern family, honoring the heritage and tradition of the existing woodwork while enhancing the home with contemporary building systems and new finishes. Thermal and acoustic performance was improved by strategically installing new insulation and cast iron pipes throughout the house. Maintaining historic details and adding elevated finishes was a central part of our process while working with interior designer Anna Pomerantz to update the architecture of Train & Williams. Along the way, two new bathrooms were constructed: a Jack-and-Jill bathroom for the kids, with tile from Heath Ceramics, and a primary bathroom with wood paneling, Victorian-inspired mottled tile from Balineum, and plumbing fixtures from Barber Wilsons. The new kitchen features custom millwork and is inspired by the workspaces of artisanal California cuisine. Arts & Crafts motifs are woven throughout the house, including Motawi tile in the kitchen and laundry room. The livability of the house is improved, through internal modern systems and warm, elevated craftsman interiors.
