Located on a hill overlooking the Silverlake Reservoir, this project caters to a family’s expanding lifestyle. Speedboat is constructing outdoor and indoor living spaces within this property that slot structure into a hillside and accommodate changing levels, while ensuring that each level of descent is turned into usable space for different types of residents. From the pool to the private patio, to the streetside garden to the driveway, each surface has a distinct attitude. The building we are designing is part of an emerging typology of Dingbat ADU. In our formal approach to the ADU, we look back to the playful tendencies of late sixties architecture, specifically referencing dingbat housing, in which structure and fenestration not only serve functional, but also aesthetic purposes. Our design combines an exterior frame that elicits a whimsical nostalgia with sleek, elegant materiality of contemporary nature, qualities both of Los Angeles character.
